PUBLIC SAFETY

North Carolina’s Southeast compares favorably with other areas in North Carolina and the country in public safety, especially in rural counties, as is evidenced by the chart below. The three major cities, Fayetteville, Lumberton, and Wilmington, have highly-trained police forces which work closely with county sheriff departments to protect the area’s citizenry.

The chart below outlines the various county Sheriff’s departments within the eleven-county area and includes the local police departments within those counties. It also reflects the sheriff’s name and contact information for each county.

The chart also reflects a comparison of the 2006 total crime rate index versus the 2005 total crime rate index per 100,000 individuals based on the NC Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. This reflects the rate per 100,000 people of Crime Index offenses reported to law enforcement agencies. Seven of the eleven counties experienced a reduced crime rate in 2006 compared to 2005.
