NORTH CAROLINA INFORMATION HIGHWAY

The State of North Carolina, in partnership with the local telephone companies, has deployed an advanced public switched broadband network across North Carolina that connects universities, community colleges, high schools, medical centers, government agencies, research centers, and businesses. This unique network is based on advanced digital technology, and it uses fiber-optic cables for carrying the data, sophisticated ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switches, and SONET (synchronous optical network) transmission systems for managing the voice, data, and video traffic.

Phase I of the fiber-optic network began in 1994 linking schools, businesses, medical centers, research centers, and governmental bodies in various parts of North Carolina. Fayetteville, Lumberton, Wilmington, and Whiteville in North Carolina’s Southeast are connected, along with other North Carolina communities such as Asheville, Charlotte, Durham, Greensboro, Greenville, Research Triangle Park, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill.

The three public universities in North Carolina’s Southeast --- Fayetteville State University, UNC Pembroke, and UNC Wilmington--- have teleconferencing capabilities. For more information visit the web page at www.ncih.net.
