Operates in the southeastern corner of NC between Whiteville & Mullins, SC and between Chadbourn & Conway SC.  In 1995 the company purchased and began operating two former CSX Transportation branch lines.  Commodities carried by the railroad are coal, wood products, stone, grain, agricultural chemicals, and processed food.  Accessible to the line are industrial parks in Whiteville as well as Marion, SC.  The railroad connects with CSX Transportation at Mullins SC and with the Waccamaw Coast Line in Conway, SC.

A terminal-switching railroad,  that started out as a streetcar line from Fayetteville to Fort Bragg in the 1920s. In 1930 it took over operation of all the U.S. Army's tracks within Fort Bragg. While its line to Fayetteville is no longer in service, the Cape Fear continues to switch freight  from a connection with CSX at Fort Junction to Ft. Bragg, NC.  Traffic is jet fuel and military supplies.

The Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad Company, incorporated in 1892, is still locally owned and

operated by the family of its founder, John Blue.  It operates in the state’s south-central Sandhills region – between Aberdeen and Fayetteville – and serves businesses in Moore , Hoke, and Cumberland counties.Two intermodal rail-to-truck transfer operations (River Terminal/Tidewater Transit Co. and Mid-Atlantic Transloading) handle bulk chemicals, plastic, petroleum, fertilizer, steel, and other bulk products. The A&R has connections with four railroads: CSX, Norfolk Southern, Laurinburg & Southern, and Aberdeen, Carolina & Western.

The A&R serves the 1,300 acre Hoke Regional Industrial Park, the largest dual rail-served industrial park in the state of North Carolina. The A&R provides direct connections with CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway. This Park is certified "shovel ready" by the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Text Box:  Operates in south-central North Carolina from Johns through Laurinburg to Raeford, serving shippers in Scotland and Hoke counties. The company, which began operations in 1909, is owned by the Gulf & Ohio Railways of Knoxville, Tenn. Commodities carried by the railroad are grain, fertilizer, soda ash, coal, and lime. The L&S connects with CSX and the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad.

Operates within the Port City of Wilmington, serving shippers on the Southeast Bank

Cape Fear River in New Hanover County. The WTRY was incorporated in 1986 to lease and operate the rail lines owned by the North Carolina Ports Railway Commission in Wilmington, NC.  The Wilmington Terminal Railroad is owned by Rail Link , Inc. a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc.  Commodities carried by the WTRY are paper, steel, chemicals, lumber, liquid asphalt, urea, and miscellaneous equipment.

Robeson

Red Springs & Northern Railroad (RSNR)

Lies in southeastern NC and passes through four towns (from north to south):  Parkton, Lumber Bridge, Shannon and Red Springs.  These towns are located between Fayetteville and Lumberton, NC.  The railroad roughly parallels Highway NC 71 for a distance of 12.5 miles.  Ownership was transferred from Advancement, Inc. to RSN Foundation with the goals to revitalize the line, restore rail service and continue restoration of the depot at Parkton.

In 1994, Clinton Terminal Railroad Co. took over operation of former CSX tracks in the town of Clinton.  It is a 3.5 mile terminal-switching railroad that connects to CSX.
