Hunting Preserves
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission manages about 2 million acres of game lands. A license or special permit is required to hunt, trap, train dogs or participate in field trials on any game land. Hunting preserves located in the southeast include:
Bladen Lakes State Forest—Bladen County
Located Off N.C. 242 North, Elizabethtown; 33,016 acres; open three days per week; camping restricted to September 1—February 28 and April 7—May 14 in designated and posted areas.
Bullard and Branch Hunting Preserve—Robeson County
Located on Secondary Road 2313 off of N.C. 72; 231 acres; no camping permitted.
Cape Fear River Wetlands
Game lands are along the north side of the Cape Fear River, northwest of Castle Hayne and including Roan Island. Accessible only by boat; 4,876 acres; open six days per week; unrestricted camping permitted. Turkey hunting is by permit only on the Roan Island tract.
Fort Bragg—Cumberland County
To hunt on Fort Bragg, you will need: a certified hunter safety card from any state; one hour of instruction on hunting on post; a Fort Bragg hunting permit; a state hunting license. For information, call 910/396-7506 or visit the website at: www.bragg.army.mil/wildlife.
Green Swamp—Brunswick County
15,907 acres; no camping permitted; parking area for preserve is located 5.5 miles north of Supply on N.C. 211.
Robeson County
Located two miles off of N.C. 130 on Secondary Road 2455; 42 acres; no camping.
Rockfish Creek Game Land—Hoke County
2,504 acres; open three days a week; use of dogs for hunting deer is prohibited and turkey hunting is by permit only.
Sampson County
Take U.S. 421 east toward Newton Crossroads, then left on N.C. 41 to the game land; 2,281 acres; no camping; open three days a week.
Sandhills—Richmond, Scotland, Hoke and Moore Counties
61,255 acres; open three days a week; handicapped access rule applies; camping in designated areas only.
Suggs Mill Pond—Cumberland and Bladen Counties
9,280 acres; camping in designated areas; restricted to September 1—February 28 and April 7—May 14.

Swimming and Fishing
A wide array of lakes for swimming and fishing are located in the southeast area. Some are identified below:
Jones Lake—Bladen County
On N.C. 242; 224 acres; fishing, picknicking, nature study, small-craft boating, camping. Information: 910/588-4550.
Lake Waccamaw—Columbus County
Located off Secondary Road 1947 near the Town of Lake Waccamaw; 8.938 acres; fishing, boating, hiking, swimming. Information: 910/646-3700
McKellars Lake—Fort Bragg, Cumberland County

Smith Lake—Fort Bragg, Cumberland County
Located off N.C. 210 on Murchison Road; 64 acres; picnicking, cable-ski, basketball courts, grills. Information: 910/396-5979.
White Lake—Bladen County
Near Elizabethtown; 1,065 acres; fishing, water skiing, boating, picnicking, camping, swimming, personal watercraft rentals. Annual water festival each May. Information: 910/862-4368
Lake Rim—Cumberland County
In western part of county on Old Raeford Road between Reilly and Cliffdale Roads; 50 acres; boating, fishing, environmental tours, summer youth camps, tennis, sand volleyball courts. Information: 910/424-6134
