Regional Data Book, Vol. XI,  2009

WASTEWATER TREATMENT CAPACITY

Listed below by county, by owner, by facility is the wastewater treatment capacity permitted flow, as built flow, average flow and the percentage of permitted flow discharged for wastewater treatment facilities for the period of January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.  The 46 facilities listed are publicly owned treatment works (POTWs).  According to the NC Division of Water Quality, it is not possible to accurately estimate an “unused flow” capacity for each facility, as many of the facilities have ongoing concerns about inflow and infiltration during storming events.  While only four facilities have un-built expansion capacity, many of the POTWs are operating well below their permitted flows due to loss of industry and other factors.  A POTW consistently operating at 80% or greater of permitted capacity must update its long-term sewer plan.  There are a few of the POTWs listed below near the 80% permitted flow capacity and four facilities, Carolina Shores WWTF (Brunswick County), Town of Fair Bluff (Columbus County) [plans to connect to Fairmont Regional System in 2009], City of Wilmington, Northside WWTP (New Hanover) [has only built at 50% of permitted flow],  and Town of St. Pauls WWTP (Robeson County) actually in excess of 80%.
