| Longtime Fayetteville Business Leader Joins Commission Board | ||
Though he may be the newest member of North Carolina’s Southeast Commission board of directors, Michael Green is no rookie when it comes to bringing jobs to the region. Appointed by House Speaker Joe Hackney late last summer, Mr. Green has deep roots in the region’s business community and unique knowledge of what it takes to forge job opportunities in today’s economy. “Economic development in our area will be important to the overall recovery and economic growth of the state,” says Mr. Green, who has previously served as president of the Fayetteville Area Economic Development Corporation and on the board of directors of the Cumberland County Business Council. “Whatever we can do to promote new business anywhere in the region will help our entire region.” A Fayetteville native, Mr. Green is former principal of Cohen & Green Salvage Co., a business co-founded by his father in the mid-1940s. After selling the firm in 2008, he is building a second career in real estate development. Mr. Green has been active in a long list of business, civic and community organizations, including the Fayetteville Rotary Club, the Salvation Army and North Carolina Beautiful. He is a past president of the Southern Chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association. In 2007, the Cumberland County Business Council presented Mr. Green with its Al Prewitt Economic Visionary Award in recognition of his economic development and community leadership. He holds a degree in industrial engineering from N.C. State University. Mr. Green and his wife, Lyn, a clinical social worker and former faculty member at Methodist College, have two grown sons. Looking back on his first few months on the Commission board, Mr. Green says his most immediate task has been getting to know his fellow directors. “I’m impressed by the quality of the people on the board and their dedication to the best interests of the area,” he says. |
