Solar

• Progress Energy program “SunSense”—residential

and commercial solar incentives for new install-

  ations, 100 MW goal

NC’s Southeast Region has many acres of flat open

fields near transmission lines for utility-scale PV

  development

• DuPont, Fayetteville, manufactures polyvinyl fluoride

film used in photovoltaic solar panels

Biomass / Biofuel

• The NCSE Region has fuel and experience supplying

biomass to market, and is one of the highest wood

residue generation areas in the State.

• The 11 counties in NCSE Region produced the

following annual • resources (US Forest Service,

   Timber Products Output report 2007):

> Roundwood products (145,276,000 cu. ft.)

> Logging residue (33,242,000 cu. ft.)

> Other removals (26,742,000 cu. ft.)

> Bark & wood residue (38,870,830 cu.

ft.—648,387.5 dry tons)

Landfill Gas

• Fayetteville has one of NC’s few existing landfill gas

   collection projects

The Region has 11 local landfills with gas gathering

potential ranging in size from almost 4 million to

350,000 tons in place, averaging 1.5 million

Hydro-Electric

Regional river basins might supply approximately 75

MW and 225 MW of power from existing dams.

Traditional Energy

General Electric’s Nuclear division is headquartered in Wilmington where they design, develop and

manufacture nuclear power generation equipment. At this location they also manufacture gas turbines and other engine parts, primarily for the aircraft industry.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

UNCW Marine Biology Department is researching

marine algae as a feedstock for biodiesel production

• The region has numerous companies that can supply

biomass products and services (Harris Selectory,

   NC, 2009)

> 40 logging companies > 5 forest

service companies and organizations

> 78 wood products companies

> 20 pulp and paper companies

• Regional biofuel-related companies

Brunswick Community College has a focus on

biofuel production through its aquaculture and

horticulture programs

Southeastern Community College has curriculum

in agricultural biotechnology with a biofuels focus; and

a renewable energy technology program.

• The NC REPS has a set aside for energy projects

fueled with swine or chicken waste. The Region has

some of the highest concentrations of this “fuel” in

   the State.
