RAIL TRANSPORT

• CSX Transportation is the primary railroad service

   provider in the region, connecting the Region’s two

   metro areas—Wilmington and Fayetteville—and

   beyond.

• Norfolk Southern also connects to CSX at

   Fayetteville.

• Three shortlines—Carolina Southern, Aberdeen &

   Rockfish and Red Springs & Northern—also operate

   within the Region.

• CSX has a major rail yard in Hamlet and a TRANSFLO

   bulk transfer terminal in Wilmington. They have other

   operating facilities in Leland and Fayetteville.

 

AIR TRANSPORT

 

Commercial airline passenger and cargo service is

   available at both the Wilmington (ILM) and

   Fayetteville (FAY) airports. US Airways and Delta Air

   Lines provide service at both airports and Allegiant

  Air also provides service to ILM. Cargo service is also

  available at the Laurinburg-Maxton (MEB) airport.

• ILM maintains a new state of the art separate

  International Terminal for US Customs and Border

  Protection, providing a full service Federal Inspection

  Station (FIS) to clear international flights. This facility

  meets the new US Customs requirements.

• Under federal law, ILM is the only location on the east

   coast, north of Jacksonville, Florida, where planes

   returning from areas south of 30 degrees North

   Latitude may land to clear US Customs and Border

   Protection without special exemption. Aircrafts can be

   serviced to include fueling and catering on the US

   Customs and Border Protection ramp while being

   cleared with no need to taxi to the FBO.

• General aviation airports are located in 10 of the

   Region’s 11 counties.

 

OTHER KEY LOGISTICS ASSETS 

 

 

41 companies in the Region provide support for the

  transportation and warehousing sector.

• NC has no tax on wholesale and retail inventories.

Technology transfer opportunities from the Global

   Logistics Research Initiative at UNC-Chapel Hill’s

   Kenan School of Business.

 

TRAINING

• N. C. Community College System—two-year global

  logistics curriculum and free customized training.

• East Carolina University and North Carolina State

  University—bachelor’s degree in global logistics.

•UNC Kenan-Flagler Institute for Defense and Business

  (www.idb.org)— focuses on the interchange of inform-

  ation between the US military and the private

  sector. One of their major programs is Log21:

  Logistics for the 21st Century.
