May 4, 2009

Nice Blends Corporation, currently based in Bronx, New York has decided to locate its operation in Whiteville. The company has purchased a 57,000 sq. ft building in Southeast Regional Park. Nice Blends Corporation will create approximately 35 jobs and brings an investment of $2 million to Columbus County and surrounding areas.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, the company president, Barrie Nadi, considered Columbus County the ideal location for the company’s sweet potato production facility. Mr. Nadi is quoted as saying, “The area is home to many high quality sweet potato growers, and its proximity to Interstate 95 provides excellent access to our customers along the East Coast.” In addition to its sweet potato products the company will produce salt-and-pepper packets, and fried-chicken breading.

This project was generated by North Carolina’s Southeast, the regional economic development marketing organization for southeastern North Carolina. Columbus County Economic Development Office in conjunction with North Carolina's Southeast assisted the company in choosing their new location. North Carolina's Southeast serves an 11-county area and has been directly involved in the creation of over 8,100 jobs and over $885 million in new investment in the region since the group’s formation in mid-1994.

The Columbus County Board of Commissioners awarded a performance-based incentive grant to attract the company. The other organizations that provided assistance were The Columbus County Committee of 100 and the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
