Regional Officials Discuss Economy on UNC-TV “North Carolina Rising” Series
NCSE Director Steve Yost was among Southeastern leaders participating in a recent public television series focusing on North Carolina’s fast-changing economic landscape. UNC-TV’s “North Carolina Rising” series brought its cameras to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) for a town hall meeting that was broadcast statewide on October 14th. UNCP was the first of four locations around the state to host the series, which examined the obstacles and opportunities facing rural communities in the Tarheel State.
Joining Mr. Yost as a panelist was UNCP Interim Chancellor Charles Jenkins; Fayetteville Tech Community College President Larry Keen; Archie Hart, special assistant to the N. C. Commissioner of Agriculture; and Freda Porter, founder and president of Porter Scientific, a Pembroke-based environmental services company.
The interactive forum addressed the region’s target industry clusters and the workforce development needs therein. “From what we see in talking to companies everyday…other countries are starting to do more than the United States when it comes to training their workforce, and there are things we can learn from other countries about how to better align skill sets with our workers and the types of industries we can bring to Southeastern North Carolina,” Mr. Yost told the gathering, which was moderated by UNC-TV’s Shannon Vickery.
