Regional Leaders Brief Southeast Legislators

Fourteen members of the North Carolina General Assembly joined Southeast Commission officials and allies at a May breakfast briefing on regional development programs and results. The briefing took place in the Legislative Building in Raleigh. Among those who addressed legislators were Commission Chairman Jane Smith, Director Steve Yost and John Swope, Sampson County Economic Development director, who currently chairs the Southeast’s Technical Advisory Group (TAG). A large contingent of the Commission’s board of directors also was there.

“It was very informative,” says Rep. Garland E. Pierce (N.C. House District 48), who attended the breakfast. Rep. Pierce, who co-chairs the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Natural and Economic Resources (NER), says keeping legislators informed about the impact of job creation programs is a key part in maintaining state support for regional development organization. “It’s important to keep us aware of the partnerships’ successes,” says Rep. Pierce, whose district stretches across Hoke, Scotland and Robeson counties. “We’ve got to be knowledgeable of the programs and their results.”
