WILMINGTON, N.C. – The North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development released the “2011 Economic Impact of Travel on North Carolina Counties” study, which was prepared by the U.S Travel Association, on Friday.  According to the study, the economic impact from domestic travel in New Hanover County for 2001 is estimated $425.84 million, a 6.2% increase over revised 2010 revenues. New Hanover ranks as number nine among North Carolina’s 100 counties in tourism expenditures.

According to the study, in 2011 Travel and Tourism in New Hanover County provided more than 5,100 jobs and supported a payroll of $94.44 million. Travel and Tourism also generated $39.18 million in state and local tax receipts. Travel-generated state and local tax revenues saved each New Hanover County resident approximately $190.02.

“We are pleased to report a healthy increase in tourism spending for New Hanover County during 2011. We believe this is a sign of continued recovery for the tourism industry,” states Kim Hufham, President/CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority. “We are further encouraged by recent increases in County Room Occupancy Tax collections. If the current trend continues throughout 2012, we could be on track to exceed our pre-recession record year set in 2007 when visitor expenditures totaled $426.08 million. When tourism revenues are up it means more jobs for our local citizens.”

Travel and Tourism is an important economic generator that infuses millions of new dollars into our local economy each year. Travel and Tourism is also among the state’s fastest growing industries. Governor Beverly Perdue announced that domestic and international visitors to and within North Carolina spent a record $18 billion in 2011, an increase of 8% percent from 2010. The N.C. Division of Tourism reports that for the first time, state tax receipts as a result of visitor spending neared $1 billion in 2011.
